Biography:
Vince McMahon, Chairman of the Board, and Linda McMahon, CEO, have proven to be a formidable corporate tag team building World Wrestling Entertainment, Inc. (WWE), into the global phenomenon it is today.
Vince is a pioneer in the television syndication business, a recognized television personality throughout the world, a visionary promoter and a fearless marketer. He continues to make his presence known as a leader within the broadcast and entertainment industries. Linda has made her mark as CEO guiding global strategic direction and overseeing day-to-day business operations and the development of technical and administrative functions.
Vince and Linda met in New Bern, N.C., in their teens. They attended East Carolina University together, and, while there, were married in 1966. In 1972, Vince joined his father’s company, Capitol Wrestling Corporation, on a full-time basis. By 1979, the company had syndicated programming to 30 television stations. In 1982, Vince and Linda purchased the Capitol Wrestling Corporation from Vince’s father and decided to take what had been a regional operation and turn it into a national, then global, venture.
Today, WWE produces new television programming 52 weeks a year. Its programming can be seen in more than 100 countries and heard in more than a dozen languages. “Monday Night RAW” on USA Network consistently is the most-watched regularly scheduled year-round prime time program on ad-supported cable television. Since its premier in 1999, “WWE SmackDown” on UPN, now known as “Friday Night SmackDown,” has consistently been one of that network’s top-rated programs.
As the television audience has grown exponentially, so has the live event audience. WWE presents more than 300 live events annually entertaining more than 1.6 million fans around the world. WWE is the leading provider of live event pay-per-views in the world.
Under the McMahons’ leadership, the company continues to excel. The company went public in 1999 and now trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the symbol WWE. WWE has started WWE Films, which produces and finances motion pictures, and is making inroads in providing content for web and digital television platforms. WWE received the Chris Greicius Award in 2004 for its more than 20 years of support for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
