Wish Kids Cheer New Role Before 25th Anniversary of WrestleMania®
PHOENIX (April 6, 2009) – World Wrestling Entertainment® Superstar John Cena, one of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s most-requested and devoted celebrity wish granters, has been named Wish Ambassador to support the Foundation’s efforts to grant wishes to children with life-threatening medical conditions.
Cena was formally introduced Saturday during a party he and the WWE hosted for 44 wish kids and their families at Reliant Center in Houston as part of the WWE’s “25 Years of Wishes” weekend event. As a Wish Ambassador, Cena will serve on the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s Wish Ambassador Council and assist in expanding wish-granting outreach across the United States. Led by basketball legend and Chief Wish Ambassador Michael Jordan, the council is composed of people passionate about the Foundation’s work, including the Make-A-Wish founders, celebrities and national sports figures, former wish children, wish parents and other Foundation supporters.
Cena is the first celebrity to be named to join Jordan on the Wish Ambassador Council.
“Being able to put a smile on the faces of kids who are dealing with such serious medical conditions is one of the best aspects of being a WWE Superstar,” Cena said. “The Make-A-Wish Foundation has an incredible mission, and I want to help the Foundation reach more kids who could benefit from having their fondest wishes granted.”
The Make-A-Wish Foundation has increased its number of wishes granted each year since 1985, including 13,425 in 2008, the most in its 28-year history. The Foundation estimates that 27,000 children are diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition in the United States each year, creating the opportunity to increase its outreach efforts to grant more wishes.
“We are delighted that John Cena is expanding his involvement with the Make-A-Wish Foundation,” said David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer. “John has shown great enthusiasm for our mission by granting so many children’s wishes in a short period of time, and he makes the kids feel like they’re the superstars. With his help as a Wish Ambassador, we will be able to bring even more awareness to our wish-granting efforts.”
For 25 years, WWE has been one of the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s most dedicated wish granters, fulfilling hundreds of children’s wishes to meet its Superstars and Divas and attend major events such as WrestleMania. World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. has also made a multi-year commitment to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation and its wish-granting activities.
