PHOENIX (June 5, 2009) – Nine children with life-threatening medical conditions will enjoy a fanciful journey in the Caribbean through the partnership of the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., parent company of Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises.
The wish cruise aboard Royal Caribbean’s Liberty of the Seas will depart Saturday, June 6, from the Port of Miami for a seven-night excursion through the eastern Caribbean, with stops in Labadee, Haiti, Puerto Rico and Saint Maarten. Royal Caribbean International is donating the cruise packages for the children, whose wishes were to go on a cruise vacation, and their families.
“This wish cruise is a celebration for these children and their families at a time when they can use plenty of joy,” said David Williams, Make-A-Wish Foundation of America president and chief executive officer. “It’s also a celebration of our partnership with Royal Caribbean, which provides the Make-A-Wish Foundation with invaluable support in granting children’s cruise wishes and raising funds to help us toward our goal of granting every eligible child’s wish.”
The cruise is part of the Wishes At Sea program, created in 2000 by Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. to facilitate its wish-granting efforts with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Royal Caribbean International, Celebrity Cruises and Azamara Cruises have granted the cruise wishes of more than 1,300 children through Wishes At Sea, providing VIP treatment and personalized experiences for each child.
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. is also encouraging donations aboard its ships during June to support the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s annual summer program, Destination Joy® . In 2008, it raised $430,000 for the Foundation through activities such as live and silent auctions on its ships, employee giving campaigns and fundraising challenges.
Since February, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has generated additional funds by inviting passengers to participate in a one-mile Walk For Wishes® on its ships. More than 5,000 passengers have participated so far, helping to raise more than $50,000 for wish children.
Royal Caribbean Cruise Ltd. passengers and employees have also helped the Foundation defray one of its highest expenses – more than 60 percent of the Foundation’s wishes involve travel – by donating more than 460,000 frequent flier miles.
“We are proud to take part in Destination Joy and support the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s efforts to make every child’s wish come true,” said Richard D. Fain, chairman and chief executive officer, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. “Our company is committed to supporting the communities in which we live and work, and this includes the amazing work the Make-A-Wish Foundation does for children facing life-threatening medical conditions.”
The wish cruise comes during the Make-A-Wish Foundation’s busiest time of the year. The Foundation, through its 65 chapters nationwide, will grant about 5,000 wishes this summer. That’s nearly 40 percent of the wishes estimated to be granted this year.
About the Make-A-Wish Foundation: The Make-A-Wish Foundation grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy.
