“ I wish to go on a Caribbean cruise”
Garrett , age 12
Missouri Chapter

Twelve-year-old Garrett is a model of perseverance and courage, having endured 108 weeks of treatment for his life-threatening medical condition, without ever complaining or losing hope. During the 100th week of his treatment, Garrett received a welcome distraction from his treatment … the fulfillment of his one true wish.

When volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Metro St. Louis visited Garrett, he told them that his greatest wish was to go on a Caribbean cruise. Thanks to sponsorship from UAW-GM, the Foundation was able to provide Garrett with a once-in-a-lifetime wish experience.

Garrett’s wish kicked off in spectacular fashion with a bon voyage party hosted by local United Auto Workers and a General Motors plant. The employees made signs for Garrett and collected additional gifts that the youngster could enjoy on his cruise. Garrett was thrilled not only with the wonderful gesture of generosity, but also that the time for his wish to come true had finally arrived.

Following the bon voyage party, Garrett and his family embarked on their cruise, aboard a Royal Caribbean ship. They traveled to such exotic islands as Puerto Rico, Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas.

When the ship was docked, Garrett took advantage of the many shore excursions, which included a snorkeling cruise, a dolphin encounter, and a helicopter tour. Of course, the 12-year-old was also able to enjoy all of the fabulous amenities and accommodations aboard the spectacular Royal Caribbean ship.

Among the more memorable highlights of Garrett’s cruise was the opportunity to attend the America’s Cup Sailing Regatta, named after the most well-known yachting event in the world.

“Back when we were first starting the treatments, it never seemed like we would make it to week 100,” said Garrett’s stepmother Betsy. “So this is a really nice ending to Garrett’s treatment.”

It may be the end of Garrett’s treatment, but only the beginning of a bright future.
