In a hotel high above the Pantheon, 17-year-old Justin’s world changed dramatically with the magic of his wish coming true. As he stood under the skylight of the Pantheon, Justin was pleasantly aware that he was about to embark on his fondest dream – touring Italy.
Justin began the first day of his trip at the Roman Colosseum, navigating the 80 entrances of the ancient wonder. Walking down the Piazza di Spagna (Spanish Steps), adventure was the order of the day, devouring the sights, sounds and flavors that Rome had to offer. The surrounding cities and towns loomed largely on Justin’s agenda, but he had just begun life as a Roman, and when in Rome, do as the Romans and walk everywhere.
Walking through Piazza Navona past markets, restaurants and nightclubs, Justin and his family soaked up the three magnificent fountains that arguably construct the most beautiful and lively of Roman squares. Through all the walking, Justin never tired of invading local pizzerias with his abundant appetite fit for the football player that he is.
The many tours booked took Justin and his family walking through Roman markets, the Baths of Caracalla of ancient Rome, under the massive Arch of Titus, and Justin’s favorite, St. Peter’s Square and the Vatican. Justin was amazed by the beauty of the Sistine Chapel and the Herculean task of Michelangelo.
But Justin’s Italian experience would not have been complete without visiting Florence, and he did just that. Within the fertile valley of the Apennine Mountains, surrounded by Tuscan vineyards and olive groves, lay Florence.
Renowned art galleries and museums abounded with stunning statues at arms reach. David of Michelangelo, the Venus of Botticelli and the stunning Duomo with its marble façade radiated the elegance and charm of the northern Italian city. Justin was thrilled to see the countryside in its flourish, but the real beauty was the family trip along the coastline to Naples and Pompeii.
The Italian coastline teemed with friendly pelicans and other seabirds that welcomed Justin and his family and led the way to a grand exploration of Pompeii. Justin learned that ash from the volcano of Vesuvius mummified the ancient city, leaving behind so many clues to how the inhabitants conducted their lives by the many dwellings rich with frescoes and other artwork virtually untouched by time.
Justin’s wish was everything he had imagined and more. The incredible art, history and work of Italian merchants and artisans were humbling to behold. Through his wish, magic was brought to Justin, giving all of his other dreams and wishes room to grow, and the nourishment needed to become reality.
