“ I wish to go on a shopping spree”
Latoya , age 9
Mississippi Chapter

When asking a child, "If you could have anything in the world, what would it be," most of us would expect the answer to be extravagant and expensive. Not Latoya's wish. She couldn't believe someone was willing to give her whatever she wanted.

"Could I have a Barbie doll?" Latoya, a 9-year-old from Greenville, Mississippi, asked. Her wish granters told her she could have her Barbie and more. Then she shyly asked if she might be able to get more than one Barbie and maybe a baby doll with a stroller. They told her she could have more…much more.

Slowly but surely, Latoya began to believe this was truly her wish, and became braver and braver. Pretty soon, Latoya's shopping list – which included everything from Uno cards to a baby that could walk, talk and eat – was being typed for her by the child life specialist at her hospital.

Now came the fun part. Latoya and her aunt Lola were taken by limousine to Jackson for a day of shopping. It was very important to Latoya to actually pick the items herself; however, the shyness returned. How can anyone take a 9-year-old to go to the mall and give them whatever he or she wants?

Latoya did quite a bit of window-shopping. There were so many things she wanted, but couldn't bring herself to ask for.

After about 30 minutes at the Disney Store, Latoya unassumingly asked her wish granters, "Can I have this?" Pretty soon, Latoya realized she could and began to splurge. At the Disney Store, the Warner Bros. Store and Toys R' Us, Latoya found all her favorite toys, dolls and a lovely selection of hats. After deciding she had done enough shopping for one day, Latoya was taken to Pizza Hut for a lunch party to conclude her eventful day.

And she was so appreciative and gracious throughout it all. Her wish granters lost count of the times she said, "Thank you."

Latoya was also recognized at the 1st annual "Serving for Wishes Tennis Tournament" in Greenville. The tournament fund raiser sponsored Latoya's wish.

With so many people's support to make her day extra special, Latoya couldn't help but believe in the magic of a wish.
