“ I wish to host an event to honor my friends and family.”
Liza , age 18
Rhode Island Chapter

Liza is truly a model of courage and persistence. On the surface, she appears to be like any other healthy 18-year-old. Beneath the surface is a strong and courageous young woman who has battled cancer for more than half her life. As part of her Make-A-Wish® experience, Liza wanted to honor and thank all the family and friends whose love, support, and encouragement have turned her struggle into success. Liza organized a black-tie gala event that would serve as a celebration of life and friendship.

More than 180 of Liza's closest friends and family walked through the doors of a majestic mansion in Newport, Rhode Island for the unforgettable event. From the music to the floral arrangements to the catering, every aspect of the celebration was top-notch. Liza was more than prepared for the magnitude of the gala event—spending the morning at a spa receiving a makeover, manicure, and a pedicure.

The most touching moment of the night came at 6 p.m., when Liza — clad in a beautiful pink satin gown — entered the ballroom.

Although the event was intended to be a tribute to Liza's supporters, all those in attendance could agree Liza was the star of the show. On this night, Liza's star shone the brightest.

Liza's grand entrance into that ballroom was the culmination of more than a decade of triumphs and struggles. The day following Liza's thank you party, she celebrated one year as a high school graduate.

Liza's wish was one of the 80 wishes sponsored by UAW-GM honoring the Make-A-Wish Foundation's 20th birthday.

Across the United States, UAW-GM is playing a major role in commemorating the 20th birthday of the Make-A-Wish Foundation® . This year, the Make-A-Wish Foundation honors 20 years and the granting of more than 80,000 wishes worldwide. The Foundation is celebrating its milestone in conjunction with honoring a three-year partnership with UAW-GM.

To kick-off the partnership, UAW-GM has contributed funds for the purpose of granting one wish in each of the Foundation's 80 chapters across the country following the April 29 anniversary of Chris Greicius' wish to become a police officer. Chris' wish inspired the creation of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. To learn more about the Foundation's birthday celebration, please visit our special 20th Birthday section.
