Sports Illustrated Kids invited its young readers to "take over" the July issue, and the magazine's first guest editor is a wish kid with a super wish story to tell.
Heather, a 10-year-old from Pennsylvania undergoing treatment for bone cancer Ewing's sarcoma, wished to meet her favorite Pittsburgh Steeler, defensive lineman Casey Hampton, and the rest of the Super Bowl champions. Sports Illustrated Kids tagged along when her wish was granted in May and chronicles her day in a two-page photo essay and story.
Heather enjoyed a football-filled wish at the UPMC Sports Performance Complex. The avid Steelers fan toured the team's beautiful facility with her family, attended the defensive line meeting with Hampton and served as the honorary defensive line coach, helping out on the field with some drills.
She also hung out on the sideline with Steelers all-time leading receiver Hines Ward and received a personalized jersey from Coach Mike Tomlin. She finished practice atop Hampton's shoulder, breaking the team huddle with an enthusiastic shout-out. She even checked out the Steelers' six Super Bowl trophies.
Besides her seeing her wish on the pages of Sports Illustrated Kids , Heather also had a hand in selecting photos for the magazine when she visited its New York City offices. The staff treated Heather and her family to a special day, giving her a behind-the-scenes look at how each issue is created.
