“I wish to ... go play in the New York Philharmonic.”Johanna , age 16
Below is a letter from Johanna, after realizing her most heartfelt wish to go play in the New York Philharmonic.
Dear Make-A-Wish,
Although the purpose of this note is to thank you for sending my family and me on the trip of a lifetime, I can't possibly express my incredible gratitude with just words on paper. But I'm going to try. The week my family and I spent in New York this December was easily the best of my life. The moment I stepped off the plane, I set foot into a wonderful dream land.
When I played in the Friday rehearsal with the New York Philharmonic (on my brand new Lorie oboe) I thought nothing would top that. That is, until the concert. Oh my gosh! With the brass blaring behind me, the sound of the strings swelling in front of me, the percussion vibrating the floor, and the woodwinds like liquid all around me, my dream came true! I couldn't have asked for more!
At the end of the concert when we were standing and the audience was applauding, I leaned over to Joseph Robinson, the oboist, and said, "My heart is beating so fast my body can't keep up." That was the way the whole trip was, and the concert was the climax!
Probably the most special thing about the whole experience was the relationship I developed with Joe. We have so much in common—big things like our shared love for music, and little things like our shared love for tuna fish sandwiches. We even have the same nickname—"Joboe."
Sincerely,
Johanna
