You would expect at least a hint of jealousy after telling others you are leaving for a vacation in Hawaii. But William's classmates were not only supportive, they helped the 11-year-old count down the days before his voyage. William had told his wish granters his one wish was to "Go to Hawaii and see the dancers in the grass skirts," and he was not shy about informing his friends and classmates of his upcoming trip.
The Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Missouri arranged a 6-day vacation in Hawaii for William, his parents and 3 siblings. Upon arriving in Hawaii, William and his family were escorted to their luxurious garden suite which served as their home base while they enjoyed a variety of activities on the island.
An avid volcano fan, William was definitely in the right place. A helicopter took William over the Volcano National Park, much to his approval. Another highlight of William's vacation was the opportunity to swim with dolphins, which are not very abundant in Missouri.
William's favorite activity during trip, however, was the luau. Not only was he able to enjoy an authentic Hawaiian feast, but also made some new friends clad in traditional grass skirts. By the end of his vacation, William, headdress in tow, learned the correct signs to fully communicate with the locals.
After an experience which included warm island weather, swimming with dolphins, a helicopter ride over volcanoes and a traditional feast, William may have future career in the Hawaiian hospitality industry.
