Six-year-old Dalton is a young angler. His love for the rod and reel showed up when he made his request to volunteers with the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of Colorado. Dalton wished to go salmon fishing in Alaska and can a fish he caught.
With sponsorship from Jewelers Charity Fund for Children (JCF), Dalton and his family – including his mom, dad, and siblings – flew from Denver to Anchorage, Alaska. Once in the Last Frontier, they rented a van and headed for Seward. On the way, they got a close-up view of Mt. Alyeska with a tram ride to the top. They also stopped at Big Game Alaska Wildlife Center, a 140-acre property containing buffalo, elk and moose. Additionally, orphaned and injured animals are also housed there, including Adonis the bald eagle, Zach the black bear and Hooty and Snappy the great horned owls.
The excited family made it to Seward and stayed in their own log cabin. With a packed itinerary, they visited the Alaska Sea Life Center – an aquarium and museum filled with Gulf of Alaska marine wildlife, such as sea lions, puffins, Alaskan king crabs and Pacific octopus. The family also took a cruise of Kenai Fjords National Park and checked out one of its famous attractions, Exit Glacier.
The first half of Dalton's wish came true when he landed a salmon and a halibut while on two fishing excursions. Although he wasn't able to personally can his catch, he thoroughly enjoyed a tour of a commercial cannery which processes black cod, halibut, herring and salmon. During the tour of Icicle Seafoods Seward Fisheries, Dalton and his family accidentally got stuck in the cannery's large walk-in freezer for a few memorable minutes! To this day, the family still gets a chuckle out of it.
