It was a history-making wish, at least in the fishing category. Wish kid Travis – whose wish was to go deep-sea fishing – caught a 12-foot, 547-pound, blue marlin during his Make-A-Wish® fishing excursion.
The youngster from West Texas first expressed his desire for a deep-sea fishing excursion when speaking to his wish granters, and he chose Hawaii as the destination of his fish wish.
After relaxing on their first day in Hawaii, Travis and his family went parasailing the following morning, and had an incredible time. After an evening filled with shopping and great food, the family rested up for the big fishing trip in the morning.
They woke up bright and early, and were onboard the Ho'okele – which is Hawaiian for "navigator" – by 7 a.m. Travis caught his first fish, a 4-foot, 24-pound, striped marlin, within the first 30 minutes at sea. They spent the remainder of the morning whale watching, as the fish were not biting. Travis wasn't complaining though, as the sights of the playful whales were breathtaking.
At 1:50 p.m. a huge fish darted across the wake of the boat and hit the centerline. Travis ran down the stairs from the observation deck and prepared to make history. Travis struggled for more than an hour before reeling in his reward – a 12-foot, 547-pound, blue marlin. The captain reported that Travis' fish was the second largest catch of the season and the largest catch ever by a child.
Travis' fish wish now lives on in Make-A-Wish and Ho'okele lore.
