“I wish to design the ‘Creation’ for the World’s Largest Ice Cream Social.”Kate , age 11
Kate, 11, was inside a Cold Stone Creamery when it dawned on her: While attending the World’s Largest Ice Cream Social in Sept. 2009, Kate heard about Jack’s wish to create the new ice cream flavor for the social. It was then that she decided that she wanted to be the mastermind behind a Creation.
In February 2010, Kate left her home in Florida to visit the Cold Stone Creamery headquarters in Scottsdale, Ariz. A limo picked her up from her hotel on her wish day, and she arrived at headquarters armed with a notebook full of delicious ideas.
But Kate was rendered speechless when she saw what was waiting for her in the reception area: hundreds of Cold Stone employees, lined up to greet their newest Junior Tastemaster. From there it was one remarkable surprise after another, including her own personal assistant and official desk space, complete with a name plaque and pink accessories.“Cold Stone Creamery really stepped up and put together an incredible day,” said Keri Gunter, corporate alliances manager for the Make-A-Wish Foundation® of America.
Working alongside official Cold Stone Creamery Tastemaster Ray Karam, Kate experienced the entire process of creating a new flavor, from conceptualizing to taste-testing. She spent hours with Ray as they fine-tuned the chemistry of her Cold Stone Creation. Kate and Ray whipped up multiple batches of ice cream – six gallons of which were shipped back to Kate’s home in Florida.
After an afternoon of creating flavors, they focused on the feature Creation for the 2010 World’s Largest Ice Cream Social. Using caramel-apple ice cream as a base – a flavor that will only be available during the month of the social – Kate and Ray concocted three delectable Creations. While Kate had lunch with Cold Stone executives, employees prepared her Creations for the big taste test.
Thirty employees sampled their work, picking caramel-apple ice cream with extra apples, graham crackers and chocolate flakes as the winner. Kate notified senior executives before attending a marketing meeting to discuss public-relations initiatives for promoting the new flavor.
In addition to the honor of having her Creation tasted by millions of customers, Kate’s wish is extraordinary because the money raised from the social will help grant wishes for other children. She had just one word to sum up the entire experience: “Awesome!”
