“ I wish to ... be an Army Guy.”Daniel , age 7
When volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation® asked Daniel what his fondest wish was, the 7-year-old decided he wanted to join the ranks of his heroes. He stated, "I want to be an Army guy." To grant the request, the Foundation enlisted the help of the Army National Guard and the 2/19th Special Forces Green Berets.
Daniel's wish experience began with a visit to the National Guard Armory in Charleston, W.Va. There, Daniel received his orders to take part in a special Green Beret training, and then use his newly-acquired skills to drive out Charleston's villains, the Blue Meanies.
Daniel, his family, and his A-Team – a Green Beret detail that had volunteered their weekend to take part in Daniel's wish – were transported to CampDawson for training. While there, the energetic boy practiced Blue Meanie captures with water balloons and Silly String. To end the day, Daniel received his own Green Beret uniform and boots, and was officially promoted to captain. That evening, Daniel and his soldiers did some nighttime fishing, built a campfire, and ate s'mores.
The next morning, Daniel and his team were prepared to confront the Blue Meanies. The villains – Make-A-Wish® volunteers in wild costumes and face paint – were harassing the shoppers at Charleston Town Center Mall. Daniel stepped into action with paralyzing water balloons and restrained his blue prisoners with Silly String. The Green Berets even rappelled from the upper levels of the mall to assist their captain.
With his work done, Captain Daniel was presented with an authentic green beret, his captain's bars, and the West Virginia Medal of Valor, which had never been presented to a civilian before. In an act of pride and affection, the members of Daniel's A-Team individually stepped forward to salute their special officer and told him, "Captain, it's been a pleasure to serve with you."
