When Jessica watches a movie or TV show, she’s always looking beyond the dialogue and the plot. The 15-year-old is usually scrutinizing the clothing as any future clothing designer would. When she was able to choose a wish, she knew it had to involve clothing design and her favorite TV show, the Disney Channel hit “Phil of the Future.”

Jessica chose to meet Ricky Ullman, who plays Phil, a teenager whose family from the year 2121 is stuck in 2004 after a malfunctioning time machine leaves them stranded. She also wanted a first-hand look at costume and wardrobe design. Disney made her wish possible by granting Jessica – who was diagnosed with juvenile rheumatoid arthritis when she was 5 – access to the set for a memorable day seeing how the stars and crew work.

Wish-granting volunteers from the Make-A-Wish Foundation of Orange County & Inland Empire presented her wish during a celebration at Roma di Italia, Jessica’s favorite restaurant. Jessica was delighted at the chance to a see a Disney cast and crew making their magic.

When wish day rolled around, a limousine whisked her family from their home to Occidental Studios in L.A. Rather than spending her entire wish experience basking in the leading man’s light, Jessica also toured the wardrobe department. She learned how the crew picks the actors’ wardrobes, and the science behind each episode’s costume selection.

Of course, Jessica was also thrilled to meet her favorite actor and have lunch with him and the rest of the cast. She found Ullman was even more likeable than his on-screen character, Phil. After lunch, she got the behind-the-scenes view of a working television show. Jessica developed a new appreciation for how actors work – memorizing lines, taking direction and getting every gesture just right.

The enlightening and fun-filled visit to the “Phil of the Future” set has inspired Jessica to continue pursuing her passion for clothing design. Perhaps one day, she will be in the position to return the favor and encourage another enthusiastic teen to follow her dreams toward the world of fashion and TV.
